Logistics is the name of the game.
The 2nd Marine Logistics Group (2nd MLG) was established in 1944 in Hawaii. The group was activated as the 8th Field Depot, but 2nd MLG would go through other names including 8th Service Regiment, 2d Combat Service Group, Force Service Regiment, and 2nd Force Service Support Group before receiving its current moniker in 2005. The group currently serves as the major logistics element subordinate to II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF), operating out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
The group was founded in the latter half of World War Two to support the war effort in the Pacific. Marines assigned to the group found themselves extensively engaged at the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. After that campaign, they found themselves reassigned back to Hawaii. The group was reassigned after the war to its current home at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, near the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. The next extensive deployment of elements from the group occurred during the Lebanese Civil War of 1958 where Marines intervened to assist the Lebanese government. During the 1960s and 1970s, the group was active in multiple Cold War activities to include the Cuban Missile Crisis and the occupation of the Dominican Republican. In 1982, Marines were again deployed to Lebanon as part of the multinational peacekeeping force.
The next major action occurred Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield in Kuwait and Iraq in 1990. Following the successful conflict, elements further participated in Operation Provide Comfort the next year. In 2002, 2nd MLG deployed elements to support Operation Enduring Freedom, and additional Marines deployed in 2003 to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since the conception of the Global War on Terror, 2nd MLG has participated in numerous other operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout its history, the group has also participated in a variety of humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts in the US, Caribbean, and Middle East.
Today, 2nd MLG is comprised of over 8,000 Marines and Sailors. The group provides supply, general engineering, health services, transportation, services, and maintenance to other elements of II MEF. This is conducted through the coordinated actions by the group headquarters directing the efforts of subordinate units. The group employs a variety of equipment to complete its operations such as the heavy trucks, engineer equipment, field mess facilities, medical suites, and more. By doing so, the group leads efforts to support the training, deployment, and operations of combat and aviation units in the State and throughout the world.
